I’m not sure what these results mean in real time processing and capturing but my two Maxtor drives do seem faster with the Sonnet ATA 133 card. Here are my tests. I’d be pleased to hear from anyone who can explicate them more fully.

I recently upgraded to a MDD dual 1.25 that boots in both 9 and X. I moved over from my earlier system two Maxtor 120 GB ultra ATA 133 (6Y120P0) to the internal Apple ATA 66 bus. Using ATTO ExpressPro benchmarker set for 256k blocks with OS9 on the Apple 66 bus these drives peaked at Read speeds of 62 MB/sec with sustained speeds of 59 and Write with peak speeds of 55 and sustained writes of 54. When I put in my Sonnet ATA 133 card with firmware version 3.2.5 the speed increased to peak at Read speeds of 92 MB/sec with sustained speeds of 89 and Write with peak speeds of 60 and sustained writes of 58. Then when I upgraded the Sonnet ATA 133 firmware to version 4.5 the Read speeds increased further to peak at 117 MB/sec with sustained speeds of 112. This is almost a 100% increase from the built-in Apple bus. But with the new firmware Write speeds decreased slightly back to 55 peak and 53 sustained.

Testing with Xbench in OS X the Read and Write speeds with a 256k block stayed the same regardless of the card used (the internal Apple ATA 66 bus or the Sonnet 133 or the firmware used): Read 52 MB/sec, Write 48 MB/sec. These values seem consistent with the “transfer rate” values shown on storageview.com: http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200302/200302276Y200x0_2.html see also:
