and many others make some great drives.

Make certain you use a oxford 911 bridge set, and good enclosure from one of these sources.

Apparently Apple has written somewhere that the use of external HDs as scratch disks with fcp4 is not recommended?
I guess using a RAID is the way to go? Any recommendations or suggestions on gear to get, what to look for & think about etc...? Is it a pain to install?
I could get 250 or 500 gig disks but am worried about the damage if they crash.
Im using a G4 2x1gig with 1 gig ram. 2 disks 80 and 120 gigs.
Cheers.

Apple has never supported firewire drives for capture. You don't need raid for DV; that is just overkill. You don't even need a raid for DVCPRO 50 or even DVCPRO HD although it would definitely help. Internal ATA drive is your best bet. If you must use a firewire drive, buy a PCI card for desktop or cardbus for a Powerbook and put the deck on the card and the drive on the internal firewire port. And even if your Mac has more than one firewire port, they are all on the same bus.
