G4/FCP3.0.2 keeps freezing

I'm not sure if this is a Mac issue or FCP, but every time I walk away from the computer for oh, say a half hour or more, when I come back it's frozen and I have to shut the computer off to restart. I used to get a message frequently that some device had been shut off improperly and I think that was my ViewSonic VG700b that was the problem because nothing else had been "shut off", but now I don't get any message, just the frozen shoulder. Also I'm not hearing the Mac chime when I start er up. Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but any help would be appreciated.

Without knowing more information, it's virtually impossible to advise you.

Which Mac? What speed? What OS? What video card?

RAM, hard drive space.

Check your system settings,including sleep mode,don't let FCP go to sleep at (at least in OS 9). Have you zapped your p ram and forgot to reset settings? Could your clock battery be getting weak.
