View Full Version : Does G5 require different drives than my G4?

Hello, sorry if this is a dumb question but...

If I were to get a G5, will I be able to move an internal IDE drive from my G4 into the 2nd bay of the G5, or is it not compatible?

Thank-You!

No.

The bay is reserved for a serial ATA drive, and those connectors are the only ones that fit.

There are some adapters that might work.

But check at Wiebetech.com, and MAKE CERTAIN that they understand what you're trying to do and with what machine.

Better not to try to jury-rig a parallel->serial ATA adaptor on the internal drive. Just throw it into a firewire enclosure and buy an internal serial ATA drive.

Thanks, guys.

And can you tell me what the difference is between the serial ATA and the IDE ones I'm currently using? I know they obviously interface differently, but do they offer faster data transfer?

ATA and IDE are the same thing, though ATA is the term that should be used when describing that type of drive. There is a difference between ATA and SATA however. Everyone (including Apple) says that SATA (serial ATA) is tons faster, but I found a site that has some contrary info. It says that most if not all of the SATA's used now are regular Pata (parallel ATAs) with a SATA bridge. This setup in some cases has actually been slower than the "older" previous gen stuff. Most likely the second gen SATA drives will be the real ones. Hopefully someone releases them by the end of Jan. the link for the info site is here;

However, I'm wondering if the Hitachi isn't a true serial ATA drive.

Someone indicated that it was, and I know I can play uncompressed footage with incident from it.

David,

The Hitachi is a true serial ATA drive. The WD is a parallel ATA drive with a SATA interface as well.

is that the Hitachi Deskstar 7K250?

do you know if the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 is an actual SATA?

The Hitachi is the one described.

The Maxtor may or may not be a true SATA.

go to barefeats.com for more info.
