partitioning Hard drive - Is there a need?

Just moved from a G3 (OS9) to a G4 (OSX)

I do a lot of video editing and had a set up on the G3 whereby I partitioned my H.D. into two sections, system and data and save all video footage to the data partition. I would use Norton's Utilities to defrag and clean up the data partition after every video project.

I never had sync or dropped frames with this set up and was wondering if I should set up my G4 OSX powerbook the same?
