View Full Version : "Real Time" On Dual 2 G5?

I've read that on a Dual Processor 2Ghz G5, many things happen in real time...I have 2.5 GB of RAM in my DP 2Ghz G5, but almost *nothing* that I do happens in real time..in fact, anything I do produces a red render bar..no change from my DP G4.
My 'first project' is a 2:30 short I rendered in 3D, and am editing, 'distressing,' and hope to add sound track. the frame size is a non-standard 400x300..the size of this little film was dictated by my hardware and speed of the 3D app I was using at the time I created it..
Can anyone clarify how you get this touted 'real time' performance, and in which tasks? I am new to FCP and not skilled at getting the most out of it and the hardware I'm running it on.
thank you!

Unless you work in a 400x300 sequence, you'll have to render "non standard" size files.
FCP 4.1 on a dual works in RT with NTSC DV, or with a card that supports SD uncompressed.
It's not going to provide real time for a 400x300 sequence in a NTSC DV setting. My guess is that you're also exporting an animation file from your 3D program.
That will require rendering.

my sequence *is* 400x300...so you're saying that I ought to be working in real time..is there something I need to check? my sequence settings say 400x300

But what codec are you using?
If you're sequence is 400x300, and you're expecting firewire output to an NTSC monitor, you won't get anything in real time.
Tell us what your sequence settings are other than aspect ratio.

Thanks, David...sorry about the delay in getting back. Here's what I see when I pick Sequence Settings:
Frame size 400x300
Aspect Ratio NTSC - CCIR 601/DV
Anamorphic is un-checked
Field Dominance - Lower (Even)
Compressor - DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Render in 8 bit YUV
Audio settings are at 48.000, but don't have sound in this product as yet.
Not sure where I'd learn what codec I'm using..
Thanks again!

You're going to have to render everything with these settings.
If you want real time with a firewire out, you need to have your settings at 720x480, lower field, 29.97 NTSC DV WITH SOURCE FILES WITH EXACTLY THE SAME SETTINGS.
Sorry to yell.
Realtime with non standard settings isn't going to happen.
Sorry to bring the bad news.
