hey all,
i'm new to the tech side of a mac...can one defrag a mac (Dual 1 Ghz G4) or can one only format it? I use my mac at work (tv production using DV cameras) & am having a lot of problems lately...we tend to capture & delete several video clips everyday...i've leased the machine to a channel & they work on it almost 24 hours a day...hence several large videos files being added & deleted onto additional hard disks (120GB x 2 HD) might have slowed down the comp considerably...is there a solution like defraging it? I cannot format the hard disks as there are a lot of data in there that are required over & over again & occupy a lot of space...how can i boost my mac performance...everyone else here is hard core pc user....all mac users unite & help me keep the mac going... /2pop/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif...any help asap would be greatly appreciated

You would never defragment media files since there is a chance of damage, considering the large amount of material being moved around. I think this defragmentation thing is more of a relic of the PC era with its small slow drives. The most important thing you can do for an OS X system is frequent repair of premissions. Your problems might stem from some software or even hardware issues, but the defragmentation thing really is not relevant.

Since you really are not giving us enough details about your system, I can't go much further. Can't see the software versions you are using from here.
