Hi Ned:
Got my Dual G5 last friday and followed your migrating article using Carbon Copy Cloner. Love CCC have used it flawlessly many times on my old system. After migrating my boot drive to the G5 I noticed only some of my software worked and some hung (spinning ball).
I decided to wipe the drive and reinstall Panther with the disc that came with the machine. Now the G5 would not shut down or restart nor could I access the system preferences (spinning ball). Have you heard of this happening to others? I even loaded on a friends copy of Panther
with the same results and yes I did go to software update for the g5 firmware and FCP/DVDSP updates.
I took the machine in Saturday and sadly am left holding two new Hitachi 250 SATAs and a Firmtek Seritek card that arrived from Cali today.
Any thoughts?
Sad in Vancouver.

HI, David
First, try to boot in single use mode (command-s) at start-up. Then to fsck -f (the command changes slightly from my article since Panther enables journaling and thus you need the -f paramenter to force the file system check).
Now, it is possible that there were disk errors on your old machine and they came across in the clone. Did you repair permissions after cloning?
Other thing I would suggest would be running the diagnostics program. Insert your G5 DVD and hold down the option key when booting. When you have the option of dianostics, run the diagnostic application to see if there are any hardware problems. Make certain you have disconnected any additional usb or firewire peripherals.
Let me know
Ned

You saying that a complete reinitialize and install of Panther with no use of CCC or archive and install, still created problem?
If you wiped out your drive, and installed either Panther or your bundled install discs, and you still can't boot, you better call Apple.
No third party RAM, etc????

Just got the machine back this afternoon. Apple service could not find any problems. I loaded panther on my firewire boot drive, worked fine.
I loaded FCP and DVDSP onto the drive, worked fine.
I then went to software update and updated everything (many items),
now I again have the same problem! Spinning disc on sys prefs
and I cannot restart or shutdown AND Final Cut stalls (sp disc)
on the startup screen!
Is there a problem with the firmware update?
Any suggestions Anyone? Please help.

OK so now on the internal drive I have installed 10.3,
FCP and updated to 4.1 and it works!
I am afraid to go back to software update and try the G5 firmware
update or 10.3.2 as I think one of them is the source of my problem.
Any thoughts? I'd like to go back to my firewire 400 boot drive so I can
RAID O this puppy up with my two Hitachi 250s and the Firmtek Seritek
card.

Stay away from 10.3.2 for a while.
It doesn't seem to add anything to the mix.

I've had no problems with 10.3.2, but if you have something which is working, just leave it alone and don't ask for trouble.
Glad things are straightening out for you...
