Default external hard disc question

is it better for fcp to erase external hard discs even when new?
Havent used one in ages but can u now just take it out of the box and use it?

Yes, you can use a new drive right away. Make sure it's formatted HFS+ (or MAC OS Extended), although you may also work even on PC compatible drive.

And make certain it's not "Journaled." Just HFS Extended format.

System drives should be Journaled, non-system drives used as media drives should not be Journaled. I'd format a new drive anyway. BTW, you'll have problems eventually if you try to edit on a Windows formatted drive in FCP. Just format the thing with Disk Utility, only takes 30 seconds, be safe.
