Default Security footage .vsf extension

Hi all, I have searched the forum and other sources for this.

I have been given a DVD with security footage (CCTV) from an recording system. the file has a .vsf extension. I cannot open or view the material.

Does anybody know how I can convert this to a viewable format.

Thanks

What have you actually tried?

I'd start with MPEG Streamclip if you haven't already.

Otherwise, I'd contact the people who created the disk and ask them if there is viewing software available. No shame in that. It's likely a proprietary format and there's no reason your system should be able to read it just because they gave it to you.

Thanks

I have tried FCP, Compressor, Quicktime and VLC (freeware) but to no avail.

I am still digging thou for a means of conversion. The supplier has no means of offering any viewing software, just the data.

It's got to be proprietary. I just did web searches and can't find any reference to that file extension. The provider is going to have to trace where this was made, the hardware it was made on, and then figure out if you can plug a video cam into that to record it live to mini-DV. Nothing in FCS or QT is going to recognize it.

Thanks Guys ...I just downloaded MPEG streamclip....it did not work on this occasion but its a nice piece of software to have anyhow.
It seems to be a common problem, I have been trawling security cam / CCTV forums and others have the same problem.

How big are the files? Just a guess, it's an MPEG-2 stream for IP. I would try VLC again and get ffmegx (http://homepage.mac.com/major4/) but try making a backup and changing the file-extension to .mpg and see if that works.

The file I need is 26 MBytes not massive but probably only a few min in duration. I'll try that suggestion
