Try this:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338

This article usually helps with complaints such as this.

Default I have same problem

I have the exact same problem, and the link for solving it is kind of BS. I've had Final Cut for years now and just upgraded to 5.1. Only now FCP will not recognize my firewire drive. It sees disks, but not cameras.

There must be some way to fix this. I've used this camera (a Sony PD 170) many times before in the older version of FCP. This is clearly a bug in FCP or OS X.4

neptunerh - did you try debe's suggestion?

It's never happened to me, either, but it could. It's been a recognized problem for a while now.

I tried debe's suggestion, which amounts to making sure the connections are correct... Something i've made sure of for years now. I'm going to try this link...

From another moderator. Wish me luck... :-)

Sorry, guys, I grabbed the wrong link outta the basket.

I was intending to send you to the other one, as well.

I apologize if I caused any delay in solving your problem.

ok there's three threads on this problem now... moderators should merge them.... but this one seems to be the most active so i'll post here:

it seems like a lot of us are having the same problem- qt itself does not recognize some cameras. i have 2 cameras that work (older cameras) and 2 that don't (newer). this is definitely a qt issue, as the cameras don't work in ichat, qt, or fcp. it is not a hardware issue b/c i have tested it on a g4 and a g5 with identical results. i have tried the suggested fixes on my g5 with no change. i will attempt to fix the g4 tonight so i can at least capture footage.

long story short, qt is broken and apple needs to fix it asap. the two above posted fixes aren't guaranteed to work.

The second link did work for me.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

That amounts to deleting the "receipt" files in QT library. Then RE-installing the latest Quick Time.

I noticed that after I deleted the receipt files, Quick Time still worked, but I still had no camera connection. It was not until AFTER I re-installed Quick Time that my camera was recognized.

I hope this works for all cameras. It worked for my PD 170 as well as an old Sony 3-chip camcorder, as well as a DSR 1500A deck.

Hope it works for you guys too. Very frustrating and strange problem.
